Jason Baker was born March 30, 1970 in Alert Bay, off the Northeastern Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. This area is representative of the Kwagiulth Nation. Jason takes the Sisiutl (double-headed sea serpent), known to guard the wealthy home of the Komokwa (underwater king), as his family crest. Jason lists such prominent Northwest Coast artists as Beau Dick, Wayne Alfred, Ned Matilpi and Stephen Bruce who he is cousins with, as his teachers and inspirations. Presently, he mainly carves red and yellow cedar specializing in masks, rattles, plaques and totem poles.
